Credit & Borrowing
Credit Score Hub
FLD is not a lender or a credit broker and does not arrange credit. This is general information, not advice to borrow.
Last updated: .
Your starting point for UK credit scores and credit reports. There is no single official UK score: Experian, Equifax and TransUnion each produce their own. This hub links to beginner guides; it is not personalised credit advice and does not promise to raise any number.
Credit scores and reports in plain English
When you apply for a credit card, loan, mobile contract or mortgage, lenders often look at your credit report (sometimes called a credit file). They may also use a score from a credit reference agency or their own model.
A report is the underlying history — accounts, payments, searches and related data. A score is a summary number.
Different agencies can hold slightly different information, and scales differ. A higher score does not guarantee acceptance; affordability and each lender’s checks still matter.
We do not recommend paid “score boost” products, and nothing on this site guarantees a higher score. Focus on accurate files, on-time payments and careful applications.

Soft vs hard searches — quick callout
Knowing the difference helps when you shop around for credit.
| Search type | Plain idea | Typical footprint |
|---|---|---|
| Soft | Quotation, eligibility checker, or you viewing your own file | Generally not treated like a full application footprint; checking yourself does not “use up” credit |
| Hard | Full application search | Visible footprint; several close together can look like higher risk (MoneyHelper) |
Ask for a quotation or use eligibility tools when comparing products — and read each tool’s own wording. Full detail: Credit score basics.
Checking your file
By law you can get a free statutory credit report from each main credit reference agency: Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. Look for “statutory” on their sites. Checking your own report is a soft search, so it is a sensible habit.
If something looks wrong, use the agency’s dispute process with clear evidence. Complex disputes may need specialist help.
