About The Finance Lowdown

Last updated: .

Who we are, what we publish, and how we try to stay clear and independent — without the sales pitch.

Who we are

The Finance Lowdown is a UK money website written for real people — busy adults who want clear answers without the hard sell. We are based in the UK and we write in plain English about the money decisions most of us actually face.

There is no invented founding myth and no stock photo of a boardroom. Just practical guidance, named products where it helps, and an honest note when a link may earn the site a commission.

Our purpose

Clear, honest UK money guidance. That is the brief. We aim to explain the important bits, skip the fluff, and leave you better placed to check a provider, GOV.UK or — when it matters — a suitably authorised adviser.

What we publish

We publish guides and comparisons that help you understand how UK money products work, what the trade-offs are, and which options readers commonly look at. Topics include:

  • Savings, account types and deposit protection (FSCS)
  • ISAs (Cash, Stocks & Shares, Lifetime) and transfers
  • Current accounts, banking and everyday money apps
  • Cashback sites, rewards and related cards
  • Travel money and international transfers
  • Household bills, energy and everyday savings tips
  • Credit and borrowing explainers
  • Small business money guides — banking, tax basics, insurance, tools and startup basics

Start from the category hubs on the homepage, or jump into areas such as Savings, ISAs, Banking or Small Business Finance.

How we work

We research from public, reputable sources where we can — provider sites, GOV.UK, and regulator material such as the FCA when it is relevant. We compare like with like, explain strengths and limitations in plain English, and date pages so you can see when figures were last checked.

Our tone is impartial and practical. We do not hard-sell, and we do not pretend a guide is personal advice.

More detail: Editorial Policy and Review Methodology.

Independence

Editorial choices are ours. Some outbound links are referral links.

Using them may earn a commission. That never buys better placement or quieter criticism.

This site may contain referral links which help support our work.

What we are not

  • We are not a regulated financial advice firm.
  • We do not offer personalised financial advice.
  • We do not sell financial products ourselves.
  • We do not know your income, debts, goals or risk appetite — so nothing here is tailored to you personally.
Not personal advice

Use our guides as a starting point, then verify with the provider and official sources. If you need advice for your own situation, speak to a suitably qualified professional.

Accuracy and corrections

Money rules, rates and eligibility change. We update key pages when we become aware of material changes, and we welcome corrections.

If something looks wrong, email hello@thefinancelowdown.co.uk or see Complaints and Corrections and Contact.

Promise to readers

  • We will keep the tone human and UK-focused.
  • We will separate general information from personal advice.
  • We will mark referral links clearly.
  • We will correct mistakes when they are pointed out.
