How this cashback calculator works
Flat-rate cashback pays the same percentage on every eligible pound. Tiered schemes pay a lower rate on the first slice of spending each year and more once you pass each threshold. Some schemes instead base the rate on total spend; check how yours works, as the results can differ.
Things to check
- Which purchases are eligible — cash withdrawals, balance transfers and some payments are often excluded.
- Annual fees, caps and when cashback is paid.
- For credit cards, interest will usually outweigh cashback if you don’t clear the balance each month — see our credit card payoff calculator.
- For cashback sites, tracking can fail and payouts can take weeks — see cashback sites.
The formulas we use
Cashback per purchase: Cashback = Spend × Rate.
Per month: Monthly spend × Rate. Per year: Annual = Monthly × 12, then limited to any annual cap.
Tiered: annual spend is split into bands and each band earns its own rate — Σ (spend in tier × tier rate). Spend above the last tier limit earns 0% unless you enter a top tier rate.
Effective rate: tiered cashback ÷ annual spend × 100.
FAQ
Is tiered cashback worked out on each slice of spending?
In this calculator, yes — each band of annual spend earns its own rate. Some providers work it out differently, so check the terms.
Does the calculator include annual fees?
No. If the card or account has a fee, subtract it from the annual cashback to see the net figure.
Why might I earn less?
Excluded purchases, caps, promotional rates ending or missed tracking can all reduce cashback.
Does this calculator store my figures?
No. Everything is worked out in your browser and nothing is stored or sent anywhere.
