Business banking FAQs

Important: This guide provides general information, not personalised financial advice. Financial products, rates and eligibility rules can change, so check the provider’s current terms before applying. You can check a firm’s details on the FCA Register.

Quick answer

Short answers to the business banking questions we hear most — from opening and switching to protection and cash. Each answer links to a fuller guide.

If you only read one thing: decide whether you’re a sole trader or a limited company first. That decides which accounts you can open and how FSCS protection works.

Who it’s for

  • New business owners with lots of small questions
  • Owners thinking about switching
  • Anyone checking a fact quickly before a decision
  • Bookkeepers answering client questions

Who should skip it

These are general points to weigh up, not advice. These FAQs may not be what you need if:

  • Your question is about cards — see business credit card FAQs
  • You’re a sole trader with a specific question — see sole trader banking FAQs
  • You run a limited company — see limited company banking FAQs
  • You need personal advice

The catch

Short answers simplify. Rules and provider terms have exceptions. Use the linked guides for detail and check providers’ current terms.

FAQs

How long does it take to open a business bank account?

App-led providers can often open an account the same day if checks pass. High-street banks may take longer. Business.gov.uk notes traditional banks can take longer to set up.

Can I switch my business account to another bank?

Usually. Business.gov.uk says the Current Account Switch Service is open to businesses with turnover under £6.5 million and fewer than 50 employees, if both banks are in the scheme.

Is my business money protected if the bank fails?

Eligible deposits at UK-authorised banks are protected by the FSCS up to £120,000 per eligible depositor, per banking licence. E-money accounts are safeguarded instead.

Do I need a business plan to open an account?

Some banks ask for one if your business is new or expanding, according to Business.gov.uk. App-led providers usually ask simpler questions.

Can I pay cash into an app-only business account?

Often via the Post Office, for a fee. Starling charges 0.7% with a £3 minimum.

Will the bank check my personal credit?

Business.gov.uk says that if your business has no credit rating, the bank may run a personal credit check.

Can I get an overdraft on a business account?

Many banks offer overdrafts subject to status. App-led providers may offer limited lending; traditional banks usually offer more.

How do I close a business account?

Move your payments and Direct Debits first, then ask the provider to close it. Switching through the Current Account Switch Service does this for you.

Do business accounts pay interest?

Current accounts rarely do. Some providers link a savings pot or account — Allica does, for example.
